My Dad And I – Fathers Day 2010

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Fathers_DayMy dad and I-we think alike,
He knows just what I mean
Before I even say a word
He reads, well, in between.My dad and I-we like to fish
Or build a model plane,Or fix a broken chair or two
Or just a windowpane.

My dad and I-we know the score
Of every single game;
Sometimes he’s really busy, too
But he takes me just the same.

My dad and I-we go swimming too,
Each year and sometimes twice.
My dad and I-we do everything;
My dad-he’s really nice.

Wishing all of our Fathers a Happy Fathers Day from the management, staff, and agents of First Thomasville Realty.

Flag Day 2010

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Flag_dayThe stars and stripes was adopted as the official flag of the United States and upon it’s 100th anniversary Congress asked all public buildings to fly the flag on June 14th. The idea quickly spread and all across the United States people began to display the flag on June 14th.

It wasn’t until 1916 that Flag Day was proclaimed as a national celebration by President Woodrow Wilson. However the holiday was not offically recognized until President Harry Truman signed the National Flag Day Bill in 1949.

Hurricane Help – Ten Ways to Prepare for the Big Storm

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Hurricane_Evaculation_Route-300If you live on the coast, or as we do in Thomasville within a few hours of the coast, you have likely experienced a hurricane or two in your lifetime. Some hurricanes are as mild as a thunderstorm, while others are treacherous events. Being prepared is the key to hurricane survival. Use these ten ways to prepare for the big storm to get your home and your family ready for the next big one!

Training Your Family

When it comes to disasters like hurricanes, you can never be too prepared. Make a plan with your family. Devise a system with each person doing specific tasks to ready your home and your family for the hurricane. Pick a “safe spot” for your family to meet in, in case of bad weather. You can practice going to this spot several times a year so everyone will know exactly what to do when a hurricane hits.

Making an Emergency Kit

Although there is not much you can do during a hurricane, you may need an emergency kit for after the storm. You should create a box to put in your “safe spot”. This box should include first aid items, fresh water, snacks, candles, matches, medication, and a radio with batteries. Your power, water, and phones may be out during the storm, so you will need these items.

Know Your Area

One part of being prepared for a hurricane involves knowing the Thomasville area emergency routes. There may be storms that simply should not be weathered. In these cases, you should certainly flee the area. If an evacuation is issued, be sure to take it seriously. It is much better to be safe than sorry in these cases! Learn the evacuation routes and where emergency shelters are located. Do not wait until the last minute to leave however, or you may not make it out before the storm hits.

Supplies

Since we live in an area that is constantly hit with bad weather, there are certain things you should do on a regular basis. First, you should always make sure you have an adequate supply of food and water in your home. Making sure your medications are always up to date is also a great habit. If you think a storm is coming, be sure to fill up buckets, sinks, and bathtubs with as much water as possible. You may need it after the storm. Making these things everyday habits is a great way to constantly be prepared for a hurricane.

Educate Your Family

Make sure your family knows that the international rescue signal is “SOS” and how to dial “911”. These may seem simple to adults, but many children need to be taught how to utilize these important signals.

Take a Class

When something like a hurricane strikes, you will find that you might need to use a wide variety of skills to survive. Taking a first aid class in CPR or other basic skills is a great way to always be prepared.

Prepare Your Structure

If you are aware the hurricane is coming, it is always a great idea to begin preparing the outside of your home for the wind and debris. You can board up windows and other glass portions of the home in order to get the most protection.

Get Your Gas

When you live in an area near the water, it is always a great idea to never let your gas tank fall below half full. This is partially because you may need to flee town quickly. It can also be done to ensure that if your town does go under and the gas stations are inoperable, you will still have enough gasoline to get out of town.

Box of Importance

In order to help yourself out if you do decide to flee your home before a hurricane, you should always keep a “box of importance” near. Many people do this and call it their “fire box” as well. This box should be somewhere very handy and contain important documents that you would want to save in case of an emergency.

Remember Your Pets

If you are a pet owner, you may be skeptical about leaving them during a storm or a hurricane. Remember to always think of yourself first, but if you are a pet owner, you can always pack them up in the car with you. Many hotels along the highway will allow pets to stay as well. It is much better to bring them along than to stay behind with them.

How to Throw a Block Party at Your Thomasville Home

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Block_PartyIf you’ve ever been to a block party, you know it is a great way to gather your neighborhood friends together for some fun. You can easily throw a block party everyone who lives near your Thomasville home will love. Here’s how:

1.  Enlist the help of your neighbors. Throwing a block party at your Thomasville home is a major undertaking, so you will need all the help you can get. Ask others in your community to help you plan, decorate, prepare food, and clean.

2.  Get permission. You don’t want your party broken up by the police or fined by the homeowner’s association. Find out from your municipal government if you are required to get a permit for a block party. Follow up with your homeowner’s association and make sure they will allow the block party.

3.  Select a theme. Themed parties are easier to plan and more fun for the guests. For example, if you choose a beach theme, you know what colors and accessories to use in the decorations: anything blue or tan, coconuts, beach balls, and Frisbees. You also know to serve beach foods like hamburgers and hotdogs.

4.  Plan a menu and decorate. Keep the menu and decorations simple to prepare and easy to clean. Choose food that can be eaten without utensils, like finger foods and sandwiches. Don’t use elaborate decorations.

5.  Have fun. The most important part of your block party is the party itself. Give yourself permission to enjoy the party and the company of your neighbors. Talk to people. Laugh with your neighbors. Participate in any games you play. This is your night to shine.

6.  Clean up. If you planned properly and have enough help, clean up shouldn’t be too overwhelming. Make sure the area where you held the party is completely litter-free and looks better than it did before the party. Don’t give your homeowner’s association any reason to prohibit future block parties.

Getting to know neighbors makes life more enjoyable.  Throwing a block party is a great way to accomplish that while also having fun.

Is Your Thomasville Home Prepared for Disaster?

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

DisastersNo, I’m not talking about the economic crisis, or any other type of personal disaster. I’m talking about the kind that Mother Nature doles out with predictable uncertainty. Your Thomasville home can never be prepared to the extent of knowing when disasters will happen, but you can be ready for anytime they do.

Know What Type of Disaster is Most Likely

While some types of natural disasters can happen anywhere such as fires and floods, other types like earthquakes, landslides, tornadoes and hurricanes are less likely in certain regions. For example, tornadoes are unlikely in California and earthquakes are less common in Wisconsin.

Different types of disasters require different preparations so knowing what your Thomasville home is most likely to experience is of great benefit.  For instance, you do not want to be underground in an earthquake, but in a tornado picking the lowest spot in a home such as a basement is wise.

Gather Supplies

Some things are common to all types of disaster preparations. Having these items on hand should be on every homeowner’s “must have” list.

*  Extra blankets

*  Water

*  Several days worth of food (best if prepared or easy to make without electrical appliances)

*  Candles or other forms of emergency lighting

*  Battery operated radio

*  Dust mask

*  Can opener

*  Moist towels

*  Emergency escape plans

*  Shelter listings

*  Pet food (if you have pets)

*  Fire extinguishers (every home should have at least one per floor if not more)

*  Infant supplies (if applicable)

Plan for Fast Action

Have disaster plans worked out for a variety of disaster types:

♦    In the event of a fire, have an escape plan prepared for every level of your home.

♦    If your Thomasville home is in a flood zone, have sandbags ready and stored for use at a moment’s notice.

♦    For tornado safety, know the best place in your home to go for shelter.

Being prepared can save you a lot of grief. Disasters are a nuisance at best and fatal at worst.  By planning for the worst, you’ll get through them in the best manner possible.

If you need more information on preparing your Thomasville home for a disaster, First Thomasville Realty can help. Call us now at 229-226-6515 or email us at info@FTRealty.com .
